Abstract
Seventy-two children from a public clinic with a hearing loss of greater than or equal to 40 dB or less than or equal to 80 dB PTA in the better ear were studied. The average age of diagnosis was 5.3 years and the average age of receiving a hearing aid was 6.3 years. Almost all of the children were found to be substantially impaired in speech and language development. The delay in diagnosis and habilitation is felt to be the most probable reason for the poor outcome. Other reasons for impaired speech and language developments are discussed.
